Fabric covered hat boxes are both decorative and practical for hiding closet clutter
By far one of the most decorative storage ideas, hat boxes make your home elegant and exciting while containing all the things you'd rather not see every day. What can be prettier than a round, square or oval hat box, covered in a vintage fabric or silk moiré? And because the traditional hot box size is generous, you can store all sorts of things inside. Furnish your house with hat boxes in a rainbow of colors; in the living room, they can hold magazines; in the kitchen, tea towels or your best napkins. Use large hat boxes for holding cosmetics in the bedroom or hiding extra toilet paper or soap in the bathroom. For the craft lover or sewing hobbyist, hat boxes are ideal storage options. They can be decorated with paint, sequins or beads: they can be colored to fit your design sensibility. They hold large quantities of small items, and you can fill them with plastic bags of craft supplies, organize embroidery threads, or keep recipe cards in them. They are a much prettier choice than many of the storage options available at most craft stores, they keep out the dust—and you can stack them!

Hat boxes come in a variety of styles and prices: the least expensive can be found at import or discount fashion houses. They often come in papier mache and may have printed paper designs on them, often in Victorian designs. You can sometimes find hat boxes on sale around Valentine's Day" the association with Valentines makes them ideal for gifts.

Fabric covered hat boxes can be found at vintage stores or new at online shops. There are companies that specialize in handmade, custom covered hat boxes, and many of them are also food safe, so they can be used for wedding cakes and cookies, holiday candy and other edible treats. Gift apparel like lingerie, gloves, and even hats are beautifully presented in hat boxes.

You don't see hat boxes used much as luggage anymore, since few women outside of British society wear hats, and even fewer travel with them. But hat boxes often include a cord threaded through them, so they make nice containers for short trips. Take a hat box to the beach to hold your sunglasses, sunscreen, a can of soda and a book. For a child's slumber party, a hat box can keep pajamas and a toothbrush. Overnight guests at your house may find a hat box filled with goodies—muffins, candy or a bottle of wine—when they get to their rooms at night. You can even use hat boxes to store your pet's toys and treats.

You can learn how to make a hat box, or you can buy one already made of clear plastic or white cardboard and cover it with a pretty paper or fabric of your choosing. If you love the combination of fuchsia and soft pink but can't find the right box, buy a plain hat box at your local crafts store and find the perfect textiles at the fabric store. Use a hot glue gun to attach ribbons and beads, to make it an extra special gift. And hat boxes aren't just for women: you can use pinstripe fabrics, grosgrain ribbons or even old silk ties to finish hat boxes for a man's study or bedroom. They are perfect for storing extra socks or keeping pocket change and the wallet from cluttering up the dresser every night.

For the perfect dorm room, nesting hat boxes can help you with vertical storage. Instead of plastic bins, try pretty women's hat boxes in stripes and polka dots for a charming and fun accent. Use hat boxes to store pens, paper, snacks and socks. Organizing closet or desk clutter is easy if you have enough boxes, and extra clothes can be stored away until you need them.
